Michael Leung
artist / designer / visiting lecturer, academy of visual arts, hong kong baptist university
Michael’s practice relates to mutual aid, publishing and the commons. He was born in London and moved to Hong Kong fourteen years ago to complete a Masters in Design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His work is situated in everyday life, affected by convivial encounters, and inspired by different autonomous spaces and communities. Michael’s research focuses on emancipatory farming communities and global land struggles/resistances. His field notes have been published in Collective Notes (self-published, 2020) and in Reorienting Hong Kong’s Resistance: Leftism, Decoloniality, and Internationalism (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022). In 2014, Michael started writing fiction, contributing to an artist zine called Fong Fo, and doing readings in public space. He is currently part of the IASPIS Residency Programme in Stockholm, where he will finish his PhD thesis novel in March 2023.
